Great South Basin The Great South Basin is one of New Zealand's largest undeveloped offshore basins. Situated to the east and south of Southland the Great South Basin was explored between 1976 and 1984 with eight wells drilled. Hydrocarbons were present in half of these. The strong geological similarities with the producing basins of Taranaki and South Australia, combined with the presence of hydrocarbons in four of the eight wells, make the Great South Basin one of New Zealand's largest prospects for both oil and gas. The recent government announcement concerning the exploration rights the Great South Basin , has seen renewed interest in the area. Two consortia were successful in obtaining exploration rights. Western Southland The Western Southland region comprises numerous small basins that extend from Te Anau to Waiau and extends offshore to include the Solander and Baleny basins. The exploration activities from the 1960s to 1980s saw two offshore and two onshore wells drilled. The full potential of these wells was never completely tested. Recently L&M Petroleum Limited has entered into an agreement with Mighty River Power Limited to jointly explore an area within the Waiau Basin. L&M's previous exploration has identified several exploration prospects within the region. |
