Celebrates the districts social history and features the collections of the Gore District Historical Society. Since 1969 the society has been gathering a significant body of local historical artefacts and information. The Hokonui Moonshine Museum portrays a fascinating element of the Gore District's past, that of 'Hokonui' the unique illicit whisky product of the stills hidden in the bush covered hills bearing the same name. From the days and deeds of insobriety and chaos, to the talk and times of prohibition and prudence, from the high Hokonuis to the High Court, time honoured secrets of Southland's infamous Moonshining days are revealed! Housed in the Hokonui Heritage centre, along with the Gore Historical museum and Fishing Museum, a visit to the Hokonui Mooshine Museum offers an enjoyable and exciting dip into this rich and varied aspect of New Zealand's history.
