Amidst Eastern Southland’s rolling hills lies a treasure trove of history, culture and recreation.

In 2003, the Eastern Southland Art Gallery stamped itself on New Zealand’s art trail, unveiling the John Money Wing, home to the renowned sexologist’s extensive private art collection.

The Hokonui Heritage Centre remembers a bygone era that saw the last of the Maori inter-tribal wars, a gold rush and 120 colourful years of moonshining. At Mandeville, you’ll find one of New Zealand’s oldest airfields, home to the Croydon Aircraft Company, world leaders in the restoration of classic 1930s and vintage de Havilland aircraft.

June’s New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards are a highlight on the events calendar, drawing country music fans from throughout Australasia. In July, the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards gives up-and-coming designers the chance to test their talent before a judging panel, featuring some of the biggest names in New Zealand couture.

A world away from the catwalk, the Mataura River is a magnet for international anglers, keen to hone their skills on one of the best brown trout fishing rivers in the world.

From fine art to high fashion, moonshine to the Mataura and sightseeing on high in a Tiger Moth, Eastern Southland offers a memorable treat for everyone.
